We recommend waiting until your child turns 7 years old to begin guitar lessons.
Playing such an instrument requires a fair amount of dexterity and strength to keep the pressure on the strings. Children under the age of 7 generally have small hands, making these music lessons difficult and uncomfortable.
For bass guitar, we recommend waiting until your child is 10 years or older as this four-string requires a lot more pressure from the fingers.
At Flemington Guitar Shop, 5 years old is the youngest age we offer private piano lessons to. It’s during this age that children begin to develop longer attention spans gaining the ability to retain more information with ease.
The right age for drum lessons varies greatly as it generally depends on the actual size of the child. They have to be tall enough to comfortably reach both the pedals and the cymbals. On average, the age of our youngest drum students is 8 years old.
Based on our experience, Flemington Guitar Shop recommends starting private vocal lessons at the age of 10 years or older. Due to the physical nature of voice lessons (proper breathing techniques, vocal chord development, and lung capacity), the younger body is usually not ready for the demanding rigors of vocal technique.
Children younger than 10 years can begin vocal lessons, though we suggest dividing the lesson into two fifteen-minute sessions. With this arrangement, we devote fifteen minutes to voice lessons and fifteen to piano training.
Jon is a driving force at Flemington Guitar Shop as well as touring with the internationally known band Tantric. Jon has a passion for music and drums that just pours from his soul. He is one of our most popular instructors and again has a love for instructing and passing on knowledge that is not seen very often. Jon is also very trained with our special needs students as well and a huge part of our state program.
Kelly is a very talented and inspiring young artist that I was fortunate enough to meet through a referral many years ago. Kelly worked onsite at Flemington formerly known as (Allstar Music Empire) for many years and now she is in NYC doing virtual lessons for us still. Kelly has an amazing way of bonding with her students, and they have never had anything but praise to share about her methods of teaching as well as her as a person.
Andy’s musical background is inspired by both his interest in education as well as performing professionally. His roots lie in underground metal of the late 2000s but he has also expanded to playing covers in various other projects. His experience has led him to acquire a variety of necessary skills needed for playing different types of music. He evenutally found himself teaching drums at his local music store in Pennsylvania. Throughout each of these milestones, Andy pursued a psychology degree, assisted in research regarding various pedagogical techniques, and obtained a master’s degree in counseling.
In 2021, he joined Silvertung, a national act with several top 40 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart. On his first tour with Silvertung, he helped open the stage at Rock Fest in Wisconsin for artists such as Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour), Phil Anselmo of Pantera, Limp Bizkit, and All That Remains.
Andy’s diverse experience in psychology, metal, and education help him create engaging lessons to help aspiring drummers gather introductory tools to build their identities as musicians.
Beginning on guitar at age 10 and piano at age 19, after having early music experiences seeing punk bands, I honed my chops over a decade and a half before bursting onto the music scene in 2018. Since that time, my band has broken out as a viral music sensation across the internet, accruing hundreds of thousands of followers and opening for legendary acts such as Kings X, Molly Hatchet and more.
My teaching philosophy is straightforward, exploratory, humorous and granular. While details are important, so is the experience of playing the instrument. Lessons focus around imparting both the technical aspects of performance and the joy of leisurely music indulgence. At home in all styles of music including jazz, classic rock and everything in between, you can learn everything from Mozart’s piano to Eddie Van Halen’s guitar in my room.
Music is a unifying force of nature. It’s the type of thing we love without having to think too hard about. Music lessons should be joyful and impart growth, thinking skills and determination. I am looking forward to seeing you in a lesson!
Anthony has toured and played with many top musicians. Currently he is playing bass and touring internationally with Janet Gardner (Vixen). He has also shared the stage with artists like Billy Idol, Belinda Carlisle (GoGo’s), Winger, Great White, Enuffs z Nuff, LA guns, Quiet, Riot, Trixter, Mr. Big, C&C Music Factory, Honeymoon Suite, Firehouse, Howard Jones, Sheena Easton, Tesla, Loverboy, Cheap Trick, Chic and many more.
During all the years of grinding and struggles, teaching was always a part of his livelihood and Anthony decided to open his first music school in 2003. This experience led to the best music school in New Jersey…All Star Music Empire!
Giving back and helping artists find their way in the music field is so fulfilling to Anthony and is a huge part of why he does what he does. Whether it is to learn a couple songs to play for family and friends or to follow a dream to be the next big artist or band, Anthony and the All Star staff are here to help guide you to whatever level you are striving to achieve.
With Anthony at the wheel along with his amazing staff and this inspiring facility by his side, you will certainly get the best musical experience of your life.
The bottom line is music is supposed to be enjoyable and the lessons should be as well. We pride ourselves on reaching our students on a personal level to enhance the “trust factor” between teacher & student. This has proven to be a great method to get better results and progress out of the students.
We as instructors want to have fun in these lessons as well and progress, interest, and trying does that for us! It is not about the money here. If we don’t see the students having fun and progressing, we will switch the students to another instructor to see if that is a better match. Not everyone clicks and that is just fact and not everyone can afford to pay if the student is not getting any enjoyment out of the lessons.
At the Empire, we focus the lessons on the likes of the students while teaching all proper methods. If the student loves rock music, we are not going to cram classical down their throats! That just doesn’t work at all. That statement is to all the parents that think it does. The bottom line is that we know the psychology behind this and we know what we are doing to reach the kids. We are all educated in music and experienced as professional musicians as much as your lawyer is in law.
The Empire likes to be upfront and honest about music lessons and we feel in the end the clients appreciate that very much. If your kids are not doing well we are going to tell you but we are absolutely going to tell you when they are doing GREAT.
Set a time to practice every day so it becomes part of your routine and habit. An easy way to do this is to follow up any homework assignments with practicing or practicing prior to doing your homework. Make sure the time you set to practice doesn’t conflict with any other activities like extra-curricular programs, jobs, or other responsibilities.
This method works particularly well for children. Generally the earlier in the day students practice, the less a parent has to remind the child to practice.
For any young child, practicing 20-30 minutes a day can feel like an eternity. That’s why Allstar Music Empire throws set practice times out and uses repetition instead.
For example, instead of practicing for a half-hour, we tell our students to practice a certain piece four or five times, doing the same with any scales we want them to learn as well. This way, the student focuses on the number of times they’ve practiced a certain assignment rather than how long. They know by the time they are on their third attempt they are almost done!
A great method that works very well with children and adult students alike is a rewards system.
Some adults will treat themselves to a cappuccino after a successful week of practicing. Parents can use it as leverage to encourage children to practice, granting them occasional rewards for successful practice sessions.
There is no substitute for a pat on the back for a job well done.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
